Yes, I Can Teach Students With Zero Practice

One of the most common questions I get from parents is something like,
“Is it okay if my teen has never practiced before?”
The answer is always yes. I work with brand new drivers all the time.

Before taking lessons, students do need an Oregon instruction permit, but that is the only requirement. They do not need any driving experience. They do not need practice hours. They do not need to know what they are doing. I have taught many kids with zero hours behind the wheel and a few who had never even sat in the driver seat until the moment they met me.

And the truth is, they usually do great.

Most of my zero experience students are driving on real roads within the first 45 minutes. We start in a parking lot, build confidence and control, and once they are ready, we ease into quiet neighborhoods. It is a simple, calm process that works every time.

Why Starting From Zero Is Completely Fine

New drivers often make progress faster because:

  • They are not fighting bad habits
  • They follow a clear step by step system
  • They start with safer habits right from the beginning

Parents are usually surprised at how quickly things click for their teen. What feels overwhelming at home becomes very manageable in a structured lesson.

What the First Lesson Looks Like

Whether a student has never touched a steering wheel or has practiced a few times at home, we follow the same plan for the first session.

1. We begin in a parking lot

Here we cover:

  • Seat and mirror setup
  • How to hold the wheel
  • Controlled starting and stopping
  • Smooth turns
  • Basic speed control

My goal is to help the student relax and build early confidence.

2. Most students drive on actual roads during their first lesson

Once they get comfortable, we move to a quiet area. I guide them through every step and help them stay calm while learning the flow of traffic.

3. If they need more time, no problem

Some students need extra time in the parking lot. That is completely normal. If that happens:

  • I can drive them to a safe practice area while modeling good driving habits
  • Or we can meet directly at a parking lot to maximize practice time

Every student learns differently. There is no pressure to move faster than they are ready for.

Parents Do Not Need to Practice First

A lot of parents tell me they feel like they should practice with their teen before booking a lesson. You do not have to do that. If you are nervous about being the first person in the passenger seat, you are not alone. That is one of the reasons I do what I do.

My car has instructor controls, I have taught thousands of new drivers, and I know how to introduce driving in a safe and calm way. Starting from zero is completely normal in my school.

Ready to Begin

If your teen has their instruction permit and no driving experience, they are the perfect candidate for lessons with me. I can help them start strong and build safe habits from day one.
